Spring / Fall
Spring Cleaning
The warm weather of Spring is a hint that it’s time to get your pond ready for the season. Spring cleanouts stimulate your pond’s beneficial bacteria and help balance your ponds natural ecosystem by removing old organic sludge and reviving the plant life. Our technicians will get your pond ready for summer and ready for you to enjoy. This process includes:
* Safely removing the fish and storing them in containers during the cleaning process to reduce the chance of stress. We will also inspect their general health and note any signs of disease or infection.
* Spray down the walls and remove any sludge and muck from the bottom(This nutrient rich water is great for plants in your yard) This process will remove water from your pond which we will refill with fresh water treated with de-chlorinator and PH buffer mix to stabilize your ponds natural chemistry. We will also add an application of beneficial bacteria to boost your ponds natural immune system and get the nitrification cycle started.
* Get the pump hooked up and running and clean the filter out. We will also hook up any UV equipment that exists with the system.
* Back flush pressurized filters
* Divide, repot, remove and fertilize any pond plants that need it
* Make any necessary repairs
* Acclimate the fish to the new water
Once the cleaning is complete, we will leave your hose on a trickle. By the end of the day when you return home, it will be full and you can turn off the water. We will have already added any chemical or bacterial applications as necessary. Spring Cleaning is the busiest time of year, so call 970-371-3151 soon to book your appointment.
Fall Cleaning
The fall cleaning is much less thorough than the spring cleaning. It is done mainly to get out any large amounts of organic material, which decompose and release harmful gas during the winter. A buildup of that gas under an ice layer could be toxic to your fish. This is also the best time to winterize the plants. The fall cleaning process includes;
* Performing a final cleaning of the pond, remove the fish and inspect their health.
* We won’t rinse the pond as chlorinated water will destroy beneficial bacteria needed for the winter months
* Fill the pond with fresh water and add de-chlorinator.
* Address any plants at this time, cut back hardy plants and remove or over winter any tropical plants.
* Return the fish to the pond.
* Decide whether to remove the pump or leave until the water gets to almost freezing.
* Remove any UV equipment.
* Place pond netting to prevent debris from getting in during the fall and winter
* Hook up or recommend any de-icing equipment needed It is important that fish are able to get oxygen during the winter months and a layer of ice can prevent that while trapping gasses released by decaying organic matter. You can also kill fish by concussion when you break apart the ice. Don’t let your fish suffer unnecessarily. We will recommend appropriate de-icing methods for maintaining a healthy pond during the winter.
*Some additional equipment may be required.
